Learning various piping techniques on how to decorate
cupcakes is not as difficult as you may think. The key to successful piping is to practice every chance you can get, and have a lot of patience. All that is needed for the various piping techniques is a good quality piping bag or a greaseproof bag fitted with a piping nozzle. With this equipment, whipped cream, buttercream icing, and royal icing can be transformed into stars, shells, flowers, scrolls and lines to create very simple but highly effective cupcake decorations that will be admired by anyone who sees them. Basic Piping Tips1. When you pipe with buttercream, royal icing or whipped cream it is best that you practice piping on a board or work surface before starting on the cupcakes. This is also a good way to test that the frosting is the correct consistency and color. 2. Place the nozzle into the piping bag before filling with frosting. 3. Half fill the piping bag with frosting - you don't want to overfill the bag, the fuller the bag the hader it is to squeeze the frosting out of the nozzle. This will also cause your wrist and hands to ach which will produce poor piping. 4. How much frosting to put in the bag will depend on the size nozzle you use. A good guide to follow is the smaller the hole in the nozzle the less icing you will need in the bag. Simple Techniques
